Battleforge is a free online game, which blends the classic RTS (Real Time Strategy) style with the concept of card games like Magic the Gathering. And Electronic Arts was able to merge these two elements in a very successful way.

The production value of this game, is what you can expect from a major West game publishers -- the graphics are bright and vibrant, while the music and voice narration enhances the quality of the game.
BattleForge originally was released as a commercial game, but now it’s totally free, with optional micro-transactions to purchase additional booster packs.

Spell cards, building construction and units, belong to one of four possible elements, which are:

Fire: Aggressive cards that can give high damage.

Frost: Defensive cards. Frost units can absorb well the damage inflicted and have access to powerful towers.

Nature: Big focus on control and creatures cards. Such cards have siege weapons and units with powerful healing abilities.

Shadow: Necromancy and destruction are the characteristics of this element. Creatures of the shadows which includes undead, witches and all sorts of evil beings.

A great tutorial

In a single map, this tutorial does a great job to introduce new players to BattleForge game mechanics. This step by step tutorial teaches you to invoque units, build towers, movement, combat and eventually capture wells of power and monuments. All this, with voice narration that makes the tutorial a lot more engaging.
For RTS fans, BattleForge have a gameplay similar to Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War. After the tutorial, players will have a good sense of how the game works, and can jump straight to a PvE campaign or challenge other players in a PvP match.

The Forge

The Forge functions as the central hub, where players can access the various game areas. It also serves as test site, where players can test all kinds of cards without delay. You can invoque new cards units to see their performance against other enemy units.

New players start the game with three pre-made decks -- Frost / Shadow, Fire / Nature, and the tutorial Frost / Fire. Building a deck in Battleforge is not very complicated, since the maximum number of cards is 20. Repeat some cards, might be a good option, because it allows the use of the same card multiple times without waiting time (cooldown). New cards can be obtained at the end of PvE scenarios, so it is recommended that at first, players should play the PvE campaign. But playing PVE scenarios, does not mean you’re always playing alone. Many scenarios require several players in cooperative mode can be completed.

In addition to the cooperation mode in PvE, players can also participate in 1v1 or 2v2 matches, which may count for the general classification (rank) or not. Matches that do not count for the ranking, offers no experience but are useful for testing new decks.
